The Hotlist, Quito-Swing Original Monks-Be Monk!

Quito’s diverse Musical and cultural hotspots are constantly changing and growing. The local music scene which just a few short years ago consisted of a lot of death metal, has now been over-run with fun-loving, original, 10 piece bands rocking the house both far and wide. Check back with this blog weekly to find out more about the scene with the hotlist, Quito.

Swing Original Monks are a genre unto themselves. The band at times is camp but the music is a tight fusion of swing, jazz, bluegrass, conga and whatever else they feel like throwing in during the moment. Baseline’s bounce and jump, guitar riffs wander and come pounding back while the drums keep the beat with the rest of the band setting up the moment to pounce.

New Article about Canoa on Travelsort

I´ve been writing articles here and there for different travel sites as a way to get the word out about some really cool people and places in Ecuador. I focus on people whoI know who are continually coming up with new things or have been here for years and are still going strong. Hopefully they help people who are headed this way as guidebooks often get things wrong and they are dated even if it´s a recent edition. Wednesdays Musings.. The One in Ten Rule.

I am sitting in the back of a taxi speeding across Quito on a street that traverses the gap between new and old towns. Skyscrapers give way to parks filled with people playing soccer, kids driving pedal cars and vendors selling everything from snacks, ponchos, paintings and brightly colored blankets. The intense Quito sun is currently doing battle with the ominous storm clouds gathering overhead.

The Scoop Behind The Secret Garden, Quito

The Secret Garden was started by Katherine and Tarquin Hill, an Ecuadorian/ Aussie couple who met and lived abroad. The building that it is housed in is actually Katherine mothers, who lives in an apartment there.

Their aim was to provide a place where travellers could feel comfortable, meet others in a casual social setting, and get reliable information about travelling in Ecuador.

They started small and worked together with other family members to get the word out. Often this meant going to the bus station and finding travellers looking for accomidation and offering them a room. When it started a dorm room was .50 cents.

Since then they have put beds in every possible corner of the five-story building as their hard work has been successful and they turn people away daily. They also have a travel agent on premises, a spanish school, and breakfast and dinner served on the fifth story terrace.
